you are to view a movie of your choice depicting an actual historical theme, person, event or series of events (prior to 1648) e.g., the Reformation, the Crusades, ancient Greece or Rome,Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra women’s contributions.

Discuss how the movie presents the topic, and critique the movie in terms of its historical accuracy; in other words, does the movie get it right, or is it making things up, or a little of both? You are not to give a movie review. Must include bibliography and footnotes. one primary source.

There will be two articles that you need to read, there will be on pdf of the readings of that movie from the textbook, there will be a rubric of how the prof will mark, there wil be a ppt of how the paragraphs should be and there will be a doc of the requirement of the assignment. You must only use the textbook citation as i will tell you in abit, and also the lecture notes. there should not be any other info from google that you are getting from. Even if you are, please dont copy the same words etc. but you could only cite the in class discussion that i will have all the notes written in one of the microsoft under each question. You could discuss in the paragraph as “as its disucssed in the class…..”, you can also use the powerpoint to cite your info in the paragraph but you will use the prof’s name to cite that, lastly, you will use the readings from the book and cite that with the authors name. the textbook reading for Sholay : Dwyer, Rachel. As one of the interviewees put it: “The director is the author of the performances; the cinematographer is the author of the use of light in the film.” As I watched, two main points stuck out for me. First, I noticed the creativity and ingenuity of those early filmmakers. We are fortunate these days–and especially in 3D!–to have the freedom to create any kind of imagery we want. In early days, it was not so simple. Filmmakers were limited by physical and technological constraints–from the chemical properties of film to the sheer size of early cameras. But right from the beginning, DP’s pushed against those limitations, finding creative ways to work around those constraints to produce the images they wanted. This leads me to wonder if the freedom we have today is too much–if we are in danger of being boring and lazy filmmakers because the technology doesn’t force us to be inventive; doesn’t present us with problems that we need to figure out how to solve. Without barriers and limitations to push against, maybe we are less likely to explore something new. One modern example of using the technology in an unusual way would be the stabilization of Pennywise’s motion in the recent remake of IT. Usually stabilization is used to keep the background steady, but in this case the director reversed the approach, locking the character’s face while he danced, letting the background shake wildly. This created an effect that felt new and strange to audiences. What other ways can we use our powerful modern technology to do something different and new in our films?
